Is Your Current SEO Agency Actually Working? Here’s How to Audit Them in 20 Minutes
Five checks, under five minutes each. If your current agency cannot pass this audit, your retainer is funding activity rather than outcomes.
Why this is hard to judge
Why US Contractors Pay for SEO They Cannot Evaluate
Most home service businesses have no reliable way to verify their SEO is working.
The US home services market is intensely competitive. Winning searches like “emergency plumber near me” requires rigorous, full-stack execution.
Legacy agencies often survive for months by sending reports filled with vanity metrics — links built, content published, generic domain authority scores — without showing a single ranking improvement for the keywords that actually generate high-ticket jobs.
You do not need to understand technical SEO to verify whether a campaign is producing results. Five specific checks give you a clear picture: commercial rankings, GEO-grid proximity, generative AI visibility, profile activity and organic call attribution. Our specialists execute full-stack local SEO built around verifiable revenue, and we want you to hold your current provider to that same standard.
The vanity metric trap
Rising Traffic, Flat Phone
The keywords in the report were real. They were also strictly informational. Nobody searching “how long does a roof last” is about to book a $20,000 replacement.
Yonatan Ben Moshe — Founder & CEO
It is the most common failure pattern in contractor SEO, and it is invisible without a frame of reference. Reports show traffic rising and content shipping, while the phone rings exactly as often as it did before the engagement started.
The report is technically accurate
Traffic did increase. Content was published. Links were built. Every number in the document is real, which is what makes it persuasive.
The keywords carry no commercial intent
Informational terms attract readers, not buyers. A roofing blog post ranks; the roof replacement query it should have targeted does not.
There is no baseline to argue from
Without a starting GEO-grid or a call-attribution number, the owner has nothing to hold the agency against.
A campaign producing real return leaves undeniable, verifiable evidence. Here is how to look for it.

The Five-Point SEO Audit Checklist
Each check takes under five minutes. Combined, they take twenty.
Commercial keyword integrity
Pull up the keyword list in your monthly report. Are you ranking for high-intent services, or informational blog posts? If the terms your agency tracks do not match what your customers search when they need to hire someone, you are tracking the wrong metrics.
GEO-grid heatmap proof
Ask your agency for a before-and-after GEO-grid heatmap. If they cannot visually demonstrate that your Map Pack proximity is expanding outward from your office, your visibility is likely stagnant. Google Maps and GEO grid optimization is the standard of proof we hold ourselves to.
Generative AI and schema verification
Does your agency have a strategy for ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews? Run your website through a rich results testing tool. If your site lacks advanced LocalBusiness and Service JSON-LD markup, Generative Engine Optimization is being ignored entirely.
Off-page authority and doorway pages
Look at the pages built for surrounding cities. Are they thin, copy-pasted “SEO in [City]” doorway pages? Google penalises this. A premium agency builds authoritative regional hubs backed by real off-page link building.
Organic call attribution
How many inbound calls last month came specifically from organic search? If your agency does not use dynamic call tracking to separate SEO calls from ads and direct traffic, they cannot prove their return.

What Determines Whether Your Campaign Is Recoverable?
Not every underperforming campaign is unsalvageable, but identifying the root structural issues is critical.
If your Google Business Profile simply needs active management and your citations need cleaning, the campaign can pivot quickly.
If your current agency has built a foundation of programmatic doorway pages and ignored your off-page authority, the website requires a structural rebuild before anything else will move.
A campaign that stays flat for 30 days is normal. A campaign that stays flat for six months requires immediate answers.
